objective: Students will demonstrate a knowledge of color, shape and depth. Students will create a city silhouette with a watercolor background
Definitions:
Silhouette- The outline of a dark shape (a city) visible against a lighter background (watercolor wash background).
Depth- The illusion of distance in a work of Art.
Step One-
Use a white color pencil and a ruler to create a silhouette of a city. Remember to draw only the outline of the city buildings, no details inside the buildings.
Step Two-
Using a ruler and a yellow piece of construction paper, create a grid that you will use for your windows.
Marks should be made at 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 inch. Line your ruler against the side of the construction paper and make 8- 1/4 inch marks. Then make 4- 1/2 marks, followed by 4- 3/4 inch marks. This process should be done on both the left and right hand side of the paper as well as the top and bottom.
Your grid will look like the grid pictured above.
Step Three-
Use the windows cut from the grid to place on your buildings in the silhouette. Keep in mind that you are trying to achieve Depth (the illusion of distance in a work of art). Small windows are for the buildings that are narrow and the big windows are for the buildings that are the widest that appear to be up front. The medium size windows are for the buildings that are in between the largest and smallest.
